Afraid of the Dentist? 5 Ways to Reduce Dental Anxiety

dental anxiety treatment Royal Oak

Talk to your dentist

There’s something about having knowledge of anything unknown that makes us feel less afraid or at least more self-assured handling the unknown. If you consider dentistry an unknown topic, maybe you can educate yourself by asking your dentist lots of questions. Find a dentist willing to listen to your fearful thoughts and concerns so they can better assure you there isn’t much to worry about. Usually, when we talk about our fears someone with more information can help by reducing our uneasiness. They may even eliminate it completely by showing our thoughts to be entirely irrational.

Meditate

Studies show how incorporating a 10-minute meditation routine can increase our overall feeling of wellness substantially. Think of meditation as a way for you to focus on the present moment and be comfortable with a subtle feeling of relaxation. This will provide a sense of tranquility we don’t always experience in our day-to-day lives. Ask yourself, “When was the last time I dedicated time to focus on the present moment and simply watch life pass, instead of trying to control everything.” With meditation, we can tune in to our natural way of being and more easily distinguish the difference between an actual threat or an anxious thought.

Bring a friend or family member to your appointments

Sometimes modifying your environment in a way that’s more familiar will reduce nervousness. A terrific way of doing this is to bring someone familiar to your dental appointments who can provide emotional support. This could be a close friend or family member who understands how you feel. You should bring someone who is prepared to talk you out of negative thinking patterns. Your companion ideally will realize they are there for you and that this isn’t so much about the two of you hanging out socializing. Make sure they are up to the challenge!

Practice good oral hygiene

By having exceptional oral hygiene you can feel more self-assured about your next visit to the dentist. With excellent dental care, you can go to the dentist with a lower chance of having a root canal or being diagnosed with gingivitis, the onset of periodontal disease. See why these conditions may worsen your uneasiness. If you were diagnosed with gingivitis, your mind would have logical reasons for feeling anxious which is not what we want. However, if you’ve been doing the regular brushing and flossing as recommended then there isn’t as much to stress about.

Seek out a therapist

Are you feeling anxious all the time or just while at the dentist? Seeking a therapist may help with dental anxiety. Your therapist may advise adjusting your daily routine to help combat both dental anxiety and any anxiety from day-to-day life. Or, your dentist may suggest specific techniques to focus on while at the dentist. The 3-2-1 technique involves naming 3 things you can hear, followed by 3 you can see, and lastly, things you can feel. Then you reduce the numbers to 2, then 1. This is a beneficial exercise you can do while in a dentist’s office or anywhere you may feel anxious.

Cosmetic Dentistry vs. General Dentistry

Royal Oak Cosmetic Dentistry

Today’s article highlights how general dentistry and cosmetic dentistry are different.

General dentists are dedicated to preventing and treating oral diseases such as cavities and gum disease. When a problem is diagnosed, let’s say, a cavity between two teeth, a general dentist will identify the best way to restore the tooth involved.

Cosmetic dentists provide elective dental procedures that make a smile more attractive. Cosmetic dentistry procedures available at Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry include teeth whitening, tooth-colored fillings, dental bonding, veneers, inlays, onlays, and dental crowns.

Some dentists, like myself, serve you with both general and cosmetic dentistry procedures. In some cases, there is a cosmetic component to restorative procedures. For example, if a dental patient comes in after receiving an injury that chipped a front tooth, the tooth needs to be restored to eliminate decay. The tooth is also less structurally sound, so it is vulnerable to further damage. In addition, the tooth affects the overall appearance of the smile. Depending on the specifics of the damage, there are several restorative options. Dental bonding, porcelain veneers, and crowns are all used to repair a damaged tooth.

As you can see, there is not always a definitive line between general and cosmetic dentistry. At Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry, my friendly team provides a full spectrum of preventative, restorative, and cosmetic dental procedures.

We treat area patients of all ages: from toddlers just beginning to get their baby teeth to mature patients who remember the days when many people were afraid of dentists and their whiny drills. (Some of our wonderful elderly patients might have crowns that are older than our hygienists.)

Experienced dental professionals who offer pediatric, general, orthodontic, and cosmetic dental procedures can meet all of your family’s dental needs.

If you are looking for a full-service dental practice in the Detroit area, I invite you to visit Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry in Royal Oak. To schedule an oral examination or smile redesign consultation, call 248-541-8770.

3 Reasons Not To Skip A Dental Checkup

cosmetic dental Royal Oak

Life gets busy. Sometimes it seems impossible to keep up with everything you “gotta do”. At Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry, we understand that. But we encourage you to think twice before you cancel or postpone a dental checkup because you think it’s less important than the other twenty things on your to-do list.

Twice-yearly dental exams are indispensable for keeping your smile in proper shape!

“But my teeth feel fine.”
We’ve heard this excuse. The fact is that no news isn’t necessarily good news. Dental issues can be progressing without you being aware of it.

1. Your Gums May Be Receding
Gum recession doesn’t happen all at once. Gum tissue can move back almost imperceptibly until teeth and bone are in danger.

2. Decay May Be Lurking
When the acids in plaque start drilling into a tooth, we usually don’t feel it until it has passed through the enamel and dentin and hits the nerve. Ouch! By that time, there is a crater in the tooth. Regular cleanings remove plaque before it can do any degeneration.

3. Prevent Oral Cancer
About 50,000 people will be diagnosed with oral cancer this year.1 Dr. Gustafson will screen for oral cancer during your exam. As with all types of cancer, early diagnosis is vital.

After your entire mouth has been examined, Dr. Gustafson will detail what is needed moving forward. Whether that’s flossing more often or discussing major fixes such as braces, we will be certain that you get all the information you need to ensure your smile is bright and beautiful! Scheduling twice-yearly exams with Steven Gustafson at Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry will ensure you avoid extreme dental dilemmas.

Professional Teeth Whitening In Royal Oak

Professional Teeth Whitening at Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry A stunning smile leaves a lasting impression. Professional teeth whitening can dramatically improve your overall appearance and give you a boost in self-confidence.

Our teeth often turn yellow or gray as we age. The things we eat and drink continually such as colored sodas, coffee and red wine worsen the staining.

Most men and women are aware that smoking is not only bad for our lungs, but can also discolor our teeth. There are even some medications that can influence tooth color.

If you are considering having your teeth whitened, you must first pick which method to use. At Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry, we enjoy discussing treatment options with our patients. To schedule a consultation to talk about teeth whitening or any other dental procedure, call 248-541-8770.

At-home whitening treatments usually consist of trays filled with whitening solution. It generally takes 7-14 days to achieve 3-6 shades lighter. Brush-on teeth gels and whitening strips take up to 30 days to obtain results. Whitening toothpaste may lighten superficial stains but often provides no change in the appearance of teeth.

Professional teeth whitening treatments performed by a dental professional achieve dramatic results that can last longer than other treatments.

All of the whitening methods may cause tooth pain or sensitivity, but this usually goes away in a few days. If you have crowns, porcelain veneers, or dental bonding, it is crucial to talk to your dentist before choosing a whitening method.

What Is Lurking Under Your Gumline?

Gum Disease Treatment Royal Oak

Hello Royal Oak! For ideal oral health, you need both healthy teeth and healthy gums. Proper oral hygiene helps keep both your teeth and gums in good shape.

When brushing, hold your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle aiming the bristle tips at the gumline. The bristles of a soft toothbrush can clean the food particles in the pockets in front and in the back of the tooth, but you need floss to clean between the teeth. Be careful to (gently) get the floss down into the pocket between the tooth and gum. Scrape food particles up and out of the pocket.

Back to toothbrushing: if the toothbrush is not held at the correct angle, the bristles can’t get in the pockets to clean out the bacteria before it turns into enamel-damaging plaque. If plaque builds up in the pockets, the gums can start loosening.

Eventually, the pockets will become too deep for your toothbrush bristles to reach. Unfortunately, the tooth structure below the gum line is more susceptible to decay than the enamel above the gumline.

There is more than one way to damage your teeth—even if the visible parts of your teeth are cavity-free, gum disease can cause dilemmas with the parts you can’t see.

We work with our patients of all ages to establish essential oral hygiene habits.

If you haven’t had a check-up in a while, or are experiencing gum soreness or recession, call Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry today at 248-541-8770 to schedule a thorough tooth and gum examination.

During your exam, Dr. Gustafson will measure the depth of the pockets around each tooth. If you already have gum disease, we will help you restore gum health.

At Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry in Royal Oak, we provide comprehensive general and cosmetic dental services including cosmetic dentistry and dental implants. If your teeth are stained and you want to brighten your smile, ask us about teeth bleaching.

Fun Floss Facts

Birmingham after hours dental

You probably believe that the crucial aspect regarding flossing is simply to do it every day. We agree. However, many people find that trying out a few different types of floss helps them to establish or solidify the habit and get the flossing comfort they desire.

Let’s explore some of the most common types of dental floss.

Basic floss is either a monofilament floss, which is often made of some kind of rubber or plastic, or multifilament, which is made of nylon or silk. Nylon floss is less costly, more common and is sold waxed or unwaxed.

Monofilament floss will not rip or tear, and because of this, many people find that it pulls in between the teeth easier. This type of floss is often referred to as “glide” floss.

Both monofilament floss and multifilament floss are sold in differing thicknesses. It is useful to find the size that works best for you. Since you should not have to snap the floss between your teeth, find the thickness that allows you to gently floss.

Dental tape is nylon floss in the layout of a wide, flat ribbon. Many Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry patients find that dental tape is the easiest floss to get between their teeth.

For those of you with braces or appliances, there are also flosses designed to be used with these devices. Make sure to speak with your orthodontist about flossing because you don’t want to break this important habit just because you’re having your teeth aligned!

A good person to give you advice about flossing is your dental hygienist. Here at Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry, our skilled hygienists are prepared to answer any questions you have about flossing, brushing habits, and even cosmetic dentistry procedures such as teeth bleaching and veneers.

My name is Dr. Steven Gustafson. My practice, Gustafson Morningstar Dentistry, has been serving the Royal Oak area since 1984. Our top services include: dentures, cosmetic dentistry, and general dentistry.
